Air India’s New First Class Will Provide Competitive Edge

Air India has installed sleeperettes, 180-degrees, flat bed seats in First Class, on all its Boeing 747-400 aircraft. B747-400 aircraft are deployed by the national carrier on the India/USA/UK/Europe routes.

The new seats offer highly innovative new standards in design, safety, reliability and appearance; and are equipped for work, sleep, or rest in accordance with the passengers’ preference.  The re-configured First Class  seats only 12.

The double seat configuration, with a typical pitch of 78 inches, is electrically actuated, fully articulated, 180 degrees reclined bed and has a step-less adjustment from upright position to fully reclined position. It will provide a minimum bed length of 74 inches.

With seats matching the best in the industry after the change, and Air India traditionally enjoying an edge in its on-board services through in-flight offerings and high standard of service provided by the experienced cabin crew, the national carrier offer the finest First Class product between India and the Western destinations viz. London, Paris, New York, Chicago, Newark and Los Angeles.

The seats have a provision for adjusting backrest and leg-rest to the desired position as per the requirement of the individual passengers. These adjustments are possible through the push buttons on the seat function control unit. The seat function control unit also has three push button for pre-defined (Pre-programmed) positions of the seat viz,

1. Take-off and landing position
2. Comfort or reading position
3. Full flat sleeping position.

The seat equipment and controls are so positioned on the seats so as to provide simplified use and maximum comfort to passengers. Further, to ensure utmost safety, all moving parts viz. backrest, leg-rest, footrest and armrests have been designed to avoid pinching or shearing.

For improved comfort and convenience – especially in terms of providing a superior writing surface - a pivoting mono-block tray table has been provided in addition to a wide individual cocktail table, which has been integrated with this centre armrest. The seats have several additional features viz.an electrically powered pneumatic 4 ways lumbar support, two snake type individual reading lights installed in the centre armrest, and head rest equipped with two mechanically adjustable ears.

The two independent single First Class seats assembled on a common basic structure are upholstered in blue coloured leather to lend elegance and match the poly-carbonate parts which are in a combination of light and dark grey.
As Air India is also introducing DVD players for enhanced inflight entertainment facility for First and Executive Class passengers, a small table has been integrated with each seat to support the DVD player.

Simultaneously, Air India is also introducing kerbside meet-n-greet service at Mumbai Airport, which would include exclusive entrance and X-ray machine; enhanced mileage points for Flying Return members; direct connections to domestic points in India viz. Ahmedabad, Kochi and Hyderabad besides seamless connections on domestic points served by Indian Airlines. Facilities such as tele-check in, advance seat reservation; meal selection and limousine service will, of course, continue to be provided to the First Class passengers.

The national carrier will also be upgrading its Executive Class on B747-400 aircraft by installing slumberette seats, with a recline of 160 degrees in a phased manner
